The benefits of learning how to sing from home
Most aspiring singers believe they need private vocal coaching to learn to sing well. While private singing lessons are without question a great way to learn to sing, the drawback is that they tend to be pretty expensive. Fortunately home singing lessons offer an effective yet inexpensive alternative and even enjoy many advantages over traditional singing lessons. In most cases singing at home will also be the most convenient option. Here are some of the advantages of singing at home:

  • You can schedule your singing training when it suits you best.
  • Singing at home means you can learn at your own pace.
  • There’s less pressure and you don’t have to worry about embarrassing yourself.
  • You can play home singing lessons over as often as you need to.
  • You get the best vocal coaching at a fraction of the cost.

I think you’ll agree that’s a long list of great reasons to learn to sing at home. However just in case you’re still sitting on the fence, let me take a few moments to answer some of the common questions I receive. (For more info check out this singing practice techniques article.)

Where do I practice when singing at home?
You can practice singing anywhere where you can be free of distraction and concentrate. If possible leave the practice area set up so you don’t have the additional obstacle of preparing your space before beginning your home singing practice.

When do I practice singing?
It’s best to schedule a specific time and duration for your singing lessons. It up to you whether you prefer to sing in the mornings or later in the day. What’s important is that you choose a time when you’ll be best able to concentrate without too much distraction.

How long to practice singing at home?
Just how long you practice your singing will depend on your experience and skill. If you’re a beginner then 20 minutes a day is a great start. As you progress you’ll probably want to lengthen your sessions to 30 – 60 minutes. It’s important to remember that a short focused practice session is better than a long unfocused one. Also shorter regular practice is much better than occasional marathon training sessions. And if your voice gets tired then rest it.

Learn to sing at home tips
My best advice is to stop looking for reasons why you can’t sing and just start doing it. If you’re short of space, then practice in the basement. And if time is a problem then do you vocal exercises in the car on your way to work or to school. Don’t let inconveniences hold you back. Also forget any hang ups you have about being heard during your home singing practice because with a little perseverance you will be a fantastic singer.
