Starting to Play the Guitar

Posted: February 15th, 2010 | Category: Arts and Entertainment

Playing a musical instrument like the guitar is a magical ability that others are always envious of. When someone hears you perform a song that they are familiar with from the radio, a cd or mp3 player, its a somewhat spellbinding experience.

If you’re tempted in being one of these magical people who can play the guitar and delight your family and friends, here are a few things that you’ll want to think about.

As with anything worthwhile, it’s going to require commitment and stubbornness to break through the starting learning part and trust me, it’s probably the most taxing element on your sanity. You need to be stubborn about it, stick with it and before you realize it, you’ll be performing songs that you never could before but remember there is going to be a tonne of practice needed from you beforehand.

Buying that first guitar

The initial step you’ll have to do obviously is purchase a guitar for yourself. I highly recommend buying a classical nylon string guitar to begin with. They are reasonably cheap and once you’ve proven to yourself that you’re not going to give up learning to play guitar, you can always treat yourself and upgrade to a nicer acoustic or electric guitar. And it’s a great thing to aim towards some sort of incentive right?

Finding guitar lessons

Next, you have to get trained up on learning how to specifically play. Learning to play guitar by DVDs, private guitar lessons, books and online guitar courses are just some of the methods available. They all have their pros and cons depending on which learning style suits you.

Learning to play guitar with an internet guitar course can be one of the cheapest ways. Whereas a book can only train you in a very one dimensional manner, the use of video, audio and print can be used to give multiple methods for a learner guitarist to understand their lessons.

Check out this review of Jamorama to read about one of the top internet guitar lesson courses available today. There is a lot of learning material to study through that can help improve your guitar playing and it’s cheap.

When it comes to good internet guitar programs, Jamorama is just one example, there are several others to choose from also. If you do your homework and research out guitar lessons reviews, you can determine what the differences and work out which one suits you.

It won’t take long to figure out what the top guitar lessons are after a little investigation.

Practice, practice, practice!

You’ll need to apply what you are learning and practice on a regular basis in order to get the full benefits from it all. You need to take things slowly at first when you’re learning to play guitar and just like riding a bike, you’ll have some training wheels on to begin with but eventually they’ll be taken away. As you build more skills when you’re learning to play guitar, it does progressively become less harder attempting to co-ordinate your hands and fingers. To quicken your improvement in guitar playing, the important element to know is the amount of dedicated practicing time you can spend on it.

If you can practice two times as much inside a month as another person, you’ll more than likely become better twice as fast as that other person. Just remember, it’s not the length of time you’ve been learning to play guitar that helps you improve faster, it’s how much.
