How to Choose a Home Fitness Gym

Posted: November 5th, 2009 | Category: Health and Fitness

One of the biggest advantages to buying a home fitness gym is that you can exercise at home without having to go to a club. Home gyms are private so you can exercise in comfort in your home without other people around you. Take into account the points here before you go out to buy your home gym.

Things to Take into Consideration

  • What space do you have available in your home? You will need plenty of space as home fitness gyms can be very bulky. You will also need a firm base for it to stand on.
  • Consider your budget? A cheap, basic home gym can be a low as 0. A good quality multi gym with a comprehensive range of exercises can be as much as 00.
  • Are you going to choose a resistance system using cables, rods or weights or a free weight system?

Advantages and Disadvantages of Home Fitness Gyms

With a home gym you can, of course, work out in private in your own home, the gym is always available and you won’t have to wait until someone else finishes before you can do your training. Your gym will always be available and, once it is paid for, there won’t be any gym fees to pay. You should also take into account the disadvantages. It can be difficult to set up some gyms and they are going to take up quite a substantial amount of space. When a home machine is always available it is easy to put off training! You may stay more motivated at a gym with a personal trainer!

Choosing a Home Fitness Gym

The most important consideration, in our opinion, is how well made the unit is. It’s no good having a flimsy gym that will not last and will not give you a proper workout. Over time this isn’t going to save any money. You should be looking for a well constructed sturdy gym preferably made from 11 or 12 gauge steel. A high quality gym will have welded joints, rather than bolts, and heavy duty strong tubing. A minimum warranty should be for 3 years on upholstery and parts. Many of the more expensive, higher quality gyms have lifetime warranties.

Once you have seen a good quality gym that is within your budget make sure that is can be adjusted easily and is easy to use. You should try to find a gym that is easy to change the type of exercise and the resistance.  If it is too awkward to do this or too time consuming it can easily put you off your workout completely. Comfortable benches that are well padded and easy to keep clean are minimum requirements for home fitness gyms. This is also for safety reasons as you need good padding on leg presses and seats, and solid durable handgrips to prevent injury and blisters.

Conclusion

If you are buying a total home gym don’t rush out and buy the first one you see. Home fitness exercise equipment can be expensive. Take your time to find out about the way it works and if at all possible try to see and test one out at a store or a local gym. Home gyms can be expensive and you don’t want to make a purchase that you may regret later.
