How much money you should spend on an engagement ring depends on your income, what you can afford to spend and how important the ring is to you and future spouse.

Many couples wouldn’t even think of getting engaged before they having engagement rings, because they are such a powerful symbol of their commitment to each other. For some, the purchase is an investment in themselves and their future lives together. One item of wealth that regardless of outcome will be hers and for some is an investment in the future of the bride. Some people find it an irritating and perhaps even dangerous piece of jewelry that is required only by tradition. Clearly every couple considered above has a very different idea of what an engagement ring should cost.

The oft quoted rule that a diamond should cost two months of income started as an ad campaign for DeBeers, and DeBeers has worked the hardest to make a diamond the standard stone for wedding rings. Engagement rings weren’t typical and nor were diamonds the standard stone until De Beers put a lot of energy into increasing the value of their mined diamonds.

When you are aware of that, you can make better decisions as a couple about the important aspects of a ring. If the first point for both is a combination of investment for the family and security for women, may be a more appropriate value in a ring that DeBeers’ two months’ salary.

Something worthy of investment may be quite expensive. If the ring is primarily a symbol of loving intentions and faith, then as little as 100 dollars on a relatively precious stone or a nicely simulated diamond can be fully satisfying for everyone that is involved.

Compare the current prices of stones and gold to the price you are willing to pay for the ones you want to purchase. With very little time these can be located on the internet.

Your ring is priced to include design, labor and merchandising charges, but if you know the cost of materials, you should get a better sense of those extra charges.

The selection of the right diamond solitaire has different criteria for every couple, and there are many choices available.  Worry more about getting the item you need, not the price. The right amount to pay for the ring is simply the actual value of it.

A person must decide how much they are willing to spend on a ring, any ring that is too expensive for the benefit you wish to receive is wrong for you.
