Posted: December 7th, 2009 | Category: Recreation and Sports

It appears that everyone enjoys singing. Even the most ungifted singers are overcome with an uncontrollable urge to  burst into song every so often. Singing at home is a great way to relax and can also be a great place to practice to become a professional singer. Of course you will need professional guidance to mold and develop your skills if you want to become the kind of singer you’ve always dreamed about. If you’ve always wanted to be a great singer but lack the necessary skills, then this article about singing at home is for you.

The many advantages of home singing lessons
The majority of wannabe singers presume they need to attend some kind of singing school or private coaching classes to sing well. While private singing lessons are without question a great way to learn to sing, the drawback is that they tend to be pretty expensive. Lucky for folks like us learning to sing at home is an affordable alternative and an excellent way to learn to sing. In most cases singing at home will also be the most convenient option. Below I’ve listed some of the numerous benefits:

  • You can schedule your singing training when it suits you best.
  • Singing at home means you can learn at your own pace.
  • You can avoid feelings of pressure or embarrassment when you sing at home.
  • You get to repeat the lessons as often as you need to.
  • You can save bundles and still get to learn from the best of the best vocal coaches.

With so many great reasons to start learning to sing at home, hopefully you’re already convinced. However just in case you’re still sitting on the fence, let me take a few moments to answer some of the common questions I receive. (Check out this page on singing practice for more info)

Where do I practice at home?
You can practice anywhere where you can be alone and concentrate. Ideally you should have a area that you can leave set up for your singing practice so it’s easier to get started.

When is the best time to practice singing?
It’s best to schedule a specific time and duration for your singing lessons. It up to you whether you prefer to sing in the mornings or later in the day. Just try and find the most convenient time for you when there are less distractions and you can concentrate.

Just how long should one sing for?
Just how long you practice your singing will depend on your experience and skill. If you’re a beginner then 20 minutes a day is a great start. Slowly you can start increasing this to 30 – 60 minutes. It’s important to remember that a short focused practice session is better than a long unfocused one. Also shorter regular practice is much better than occasional marathon training sessions. And don’t strain your voice. If it gets tired, then rest it.

Learn to sing at home tips
My best advice is to stop looking for reasons why you can’t sing and just start doing it. If space is a problem for you at home, then practice singing in the shower or in the basement. Pressed for time? Then practice your vocal drills in the car to work or school. Don’t let inconveniences hold you back. Also forget any hang ups you have about being heard during your home singing practice because with a little perseverance you will be a fantastic singer.
