Technology is crucial for any internet marketing home based business, however, often beginning internet marketers don’t have a good understanding of the technologies necessary or how it will impact their organization.

These ten recommendations ought to help you get off to a good start. Whenever possible, try to launch systems and processes that integrate seamlessly, and are accessible all of the time to support patrons and prospects.

Build a computerized system if you want to make your work uncomplicated and your bank account fat.

1. Computer & Printer

If you want to do affiliate marketing, you’ll clearly need a computer of some sort – preferably one of your own, either a standard computer or a laptop. You’ll need one with plenty of memory and speed. A broadband internet connection is preferred over dial-up. You’ll also need a printer. If you can, get both with wireless capabilities.

2. Your Unique Domain

Be sure to buy a website name that you own, so that you can set off~start} to establish your own personal or business stamp. Further, many providers will not allow you to reference an affiliate website, but only a website name that you own. A first-rate domain name will be concise (30 characters or less), sensible to the eye and the ear, and reflective of your product or service. The most popular names end in “.com” and those are preferred for many affiliate marketing businesses, provided they’re obtainable.

3. Communications

Another vital tool is telecommunications, including an ISP and a telephone – either land-line, cellular, or VOIP, with or without headset, whichever you like. It should have both local and long distance features, and if you intend to hold teleconferences for your downline, the ability to handle conference calls. If you’re going to do workshops, etc., you’ll most likely want to invest in a teleconferencing service that can carry many, perhaps hundreds or even a thousand, calls concurrently.

4. Web Hosting

You’ll have to have a hosting service to provide a “home” for your website. There are many web hosting companies available to help small businesses and internet businesses. Their capabilities do vary somewhat, as do their costs, so make sure to comparison shop before buying one.

5. Data & Systems Protection

You’ll also want robust security for your software and information. This can take the form of physical security, plus technologies such as firewalls, and security programs like McAfee or Norton.

6. Applications & Data Backup & Restore Processes

Another necessary, but frequently overlooked, need is for backup of your locally resident applications and information. Despite other security measures, there will eventually come a time when you undergo some sort of a system crash, with either partial or complete loss of data and key programs. So you will also require a healthy backup and restore system.

7. Products

You’ll need one or more products to sell – products that you have developed yourself, or ones that have been created by other people. If you offer your custom created goods, then you’ll also have to worry about maintaining appropriate inventories, performing upgrades, handling returns, etc. If you get your products from other vendors, then you’ll have to work at maintaining the relations with those vendors, order fulfillments, customer satisfaction and receivables and collections.

8. Affiliate Program Network

If you’re planning to advertise multiple affiliate products, you’ll doubtless also want to participate with one or more Affilate Program Networks (APNs), such as ClickBank, Commission Junction, or LinkShare, etc. to handle your commissions, sales statistics, and other back office functions for you.

9. Web 2.0 Features

The Web is very dynamic, so if you want to be successful in today’s environment, you’ll want sites and services that enable blogging and interactive communities (i.e., ones that use Web 2.0 to support a whole host of participation, using the web as the network platform).

10. Technical Support

Lastly – another often overlooked requirement – is the need for outstanding technical support – for both your local hardware and software, but even more importantly, for any of your customer-facing websites and product systems.

If your systems go down and you are powerless to get quick technical support from any/all your vendors, the resultant downtime can influence your marketing campaigns, you can lose or push away potential purchasers, and ultimately, your profits will suffer (and your brand, as well).
